Interview: Silke Seybold
Bönnigheim, Germany

“The darkroom recharged me, and the adventures that I had in Detroit were my fuel to keep going.”

Silke Seybold’s journey from the rigid structures of Germany to the wild, untamed ruins of Detroit is nothing short of exhilarating. In this captivating interview, she recounts how the abandoned buildings of Detroit became both her playground and her muse, driving her to explore photography in deeply personal ways. Stripping down to her bare self, she immersed herself in these forgotten spaces, using her art to mirror the decay and liberation she felt within. This is a tale of danger, discovery, and an unbreakable bond with a city that allowed her to reinvent herself in the most unexpected ways.

Interview: Chris Round Sydney, Australia

"It's about acknowledging our role as integral parts of the natural world and understanding the myriad complexities and tensions between our interventions and the environment."

In the wake of COP27, Chris Round’s In The Shadows of Pharaohs emerges as a poignant reflection on Egypt’s battle between preserving its ancient legacy and facing today's environmental crises. This interview reveals how Round captures the tension between the timeless grandeur of Egypt’s monuments and the relentless encroachment of urban development. His images, like the empty chairs aligned with the Great Pyramids, serve as stark reminders of the disconnect between past and present. As the Nile struggles under the weight of climate change and overpopulation, Round’s work urges us to confront the delicate balance between maintaining our cultural heritage and advancing into an uncertain future.

"Climate change is putting all manner of architectural cultural heritage at risk of loss and deterioration, but polar regions are being affected at a much faster pace than the rest of the world. When it comes to historic places, the time to document is now."

Born under the expansive skies of Spokane, WA and raised amidst the tranquil surroundings of Richland, WA, Cowan's journey into the creative domain was as inevitable as the passage of time. His early forays into art, marked by the tender encouragement of a mother who saw brilliance in a kindergarten sketch of a dinosaur, set the stage for a life interwoven with the pursuit of beauty and the documentation of history.

Asheville, North Carolina

“With chemigrams, it's all inherent in that silver gelatin paper I fell in love with all those years ago. There's so much potential just in that piece of paper.”

Bridget Conn’s exploration of chemigrams showcases her deep engagement with the material possibilities of silver gelatin paper. By embracing the unpredictable interactions of chemistry and light, Conn creates abstract works that prioritize the process as much as the final image. Her approach highlights the tactile and experimental nature of analog photography, inviting viewers to consider the artistic potential that lies within the medium itself. Conn’s work encourages a thoughtful exploration of the creative process, where the unexpected outcomes of chemigrams serve as a reminder of the beauty found in embracing uncertainty.

Feature: Jessica Somers
Terryville, Connecticut, USA

“The photographer is always in the image in some way, especially with still life where you’re really controlling that environment. I like exploring the idea of, ‘This is how I see myself, this is how I wish I was, these are other people that I wish I could be.”

Jessica Somers’s My Trinity is a Fortress offers a deeply personal exploration of nontraditional family dynamics through meticulously crafted photographic tableaus. Her work transcends conventional family portraits, using silver gelatin prints to capture the emotional complexity of her bond with her husband and their dog, Grover. Somers’s images blend the ethereal with the everyday, creating scenes that are both intimate and universally resonant. By incorporating elements of fantasy and symbolism, she delves into themes of identity, belonging, and the evolving nature of family. Somers’s photography invites viewers to reflect on the richness of their own familial connections, challenging traditional definitions of family in the process.

“My work is a conversation with history, a space in which photography can haunt itself. At this intersection of the old and the new, I create photographic objects and installations that comment on both our history and current state of existence.”

Who is David Emitt Adams? In a nutshell, David is a photographer and educator based in the Southwest. He is known for using wet-plate collodion chemistry and his custom-built ultra-large-format camera to capture images directly on the surface of found metal objects.

Zamora, Castilla Y
LEÓN, Spain

“Each photograph is carefully planned in terms of the number of tears and their shape but this technique is often unpredictable and allows me to extrapolate the wonder of experimentation every time.”

Her journey, deeply rooted in the industrial landscapes of Brescia, Italy, transcends the conventional boundaries of the medium, entering into the realms of psycho-physical transformation and the fluidity of change. Art, particularly in the realm of analog photography, serves as a powerful medium for connection in an increasingly fragmented world. In times of conflict and division, it is art that unites us, transcending borders and cultural divides. This edition of Analog Forever celebrates the diverse individuals who continue to shoot film, each with their own unique perspective and story. These photographers, from all corners of the globe, use their cameras not just to capture images, but to build bridges between people.

Film photography, with its tangible and deliberate nature, encourages us to slow down and truly see the world around us—and in doing so, we begin to see each other. In a world often defined by discord, the act of creating and sharing art reminds us of our shared humanity. The images and narratives within this edition highlight the profound ways in which art fosters empathy and understanding.

As you explore Edition 10, I hope you find not only inspiration but also a sense of community—a reminder that despite the chaos, art remains a steadfast rock, guiding us toward connection and peace.
