We are excited to announce that our April 2020 online group exhibition, “Light”, is being curated by the Executive Director and Curator at the Colorado Photographic Arts Center, Samantha Johnston! To enter, all you need to do is read and respond to the following prompt with your analog photography:

Samantha Johnston Writes: Light is defined as something that makes vision possible, light is also how we create images and it defines our photographs. Like many photographers, I am drawn to light the way it changes, how our eyes perceive it versus our cameras. How it occupies spaces and landscapes to show us something different and the way it changes with the seasons. I am often enamored with the ways in which light plays on walls and reflects in different spaces.  

Analog photography creates many ways for photographers to seize light whether it's a camera or light-sensitive paper to name a few. While digital photography is widely in use there are still those who are using more traditional methods to create images. How do you capture or explore light in your photographs conceptually, literally?

We invite you to submit up to two photographs for this exhibition that capture the concept of this theme. We offer no limits to the photographs submitted, other than the fact that they are created with analog film or process. The best of these images will be showcased in an online show curated by the Executive Director and Curator at the Colorado Photographic Arts Center, Samantha Johnston! This online exhibition will go live on our website on April 13th, 2020! Please follow the directions below to complete your submission. Good luck!

About the Curator

Samantha Johnston has been the Executive Director and Curator at the Colorado Photographic Arts Center since 2015. She holds a certificate in Arts Development and Program Management from the University of Denver, an MFA from Lesley University College of Art & Design, and a BFA from Alfred University. Prior to joining CPAC, she taught photography and visual arts for 12 years at high schools in Boston and Denver. 

She has curated exhibitions with contemporary artists such as Jess T. Dugan, Daniel Coburn, Barbara Ciurej & Lindsay Lochman, and Zora Murff. Samantha has served as a reviewer at Houston FotoFest, Review Santa Fe, PhotoPlus New York, Medium, Month of Photography (MoP), and Filter. She has juried several exhibitions including Critical Mass and The Fence. 

She is a longtime member of the Society for Photographic Education, and served as Treasurer of the Southwest region from 2013-2016 and Co-Chair of SPE’s 2013 Southwest regional conference in Denver. She was named one of Colorado’s Top 100 Creatives 3.0 by Westword and has been featured in Lenscratch.

Submission Guidelines: 

Image Specifications:
1) Only .jpg files will be accepted.
2) Images must be 1500px on the shortest side at 72dpi.
3) No photo-shopped borders or watermarks. 
4) Only two images may be submitted.
5) Images must be named in the following format: “FirstNameLastName1.jpg”, etc.

Email Specifications:
1) The subject line of your email should state: "Submission: Light”
2) Please ATTACH your images to the email. Do not embed them. Do not attach a google drive or dropbox link. 
3) Please do not send PDF or Text Files. Please put all information into the body of the email.

Specific information needed for each Submission:
1) Your name as you would like it to appear.
2) The Camera and Process used to create your images.
3) Titles for each of your photograph(s). Write out each title exactly as you would like it to appear.
4) Email Address in the text of the email.
5) The Website Address you would like your images linked to.
