We are excited to announce that our September 2022 online group exhibition, “Instant Image,” is being curated by Debra Klomp Ching, co-owner of the Klompching Gallery, New York! The deadline for submissions is August 31st, 2022. To enter, all you need to do is read and respond to the following prompt with your analog photography. The best of these images will be showcased in an online show, beginning September 19th, 2022. Good luck!

Prompt: Way before the immediacy of image making via cell 'phones and digital imaging, there was the Polaroid camera and film—introduced to the world in the 1940s by Edward Land. Polaroid was, without a doubt, a significant technological breakthrough in the history of photography. It brought instant gratification to the masses and sparked the imagination of the general populace.

Importantly, it was and remains, an inspirational tool of creative expression for swaths of artists. The Polaroid is a methodology of making photographs that is energetic, playful, serendipitous and experimental. The medium's quirkiness also contributes, in no small way, to more serious questions of the purpose and meaning of photography itself.

As a post-graduate student, the Polaroid medium was one that I chose to work with, in order to explore the notion of whether-or-not texture can exist in a photograph—such as painting, sculpture, textiles etc. The texture had to originate in the actual photograph. My series 'Facture and Facade', was made by manipulating the Polaroid dyes, as they developed following exposure. The top layer of the Polaroid was then removed, leaving a surface quality similar to that of a painting. This work formed my final exhibition, before pursuing a career as a curator and gallery owner.

For this open call, I'm looking for artworks that imaginatively utilize the Polaroid medium. There is no theme subject-wise, I'm particularly interested in photographs that expand the lexicon of the Polaroid, and those images that fully engage with the nature of the medium itself. Photographs are required to be made with Go, i-Type, 600, SX-70, Polaroid pack films, Polaroid 4x5 or 8x10, or Fuji instant films.

Deadline for Submissions is August 31st, 2022

Michael Behlen is a photography enthusiast from Fresno, CA. He works in finance and spends his free time shooting instant film and seeing live music, usually a combination of the two. He has self- published two Polaroid photobooks--“Searching for Stillness, Vol. 1” and “I Was a Pioneer,” literally a boxed set of his instant film work. He exhibited a variety of his photos at Raizana Teas, a Fresno tea room and health food store; his work there, “Polaroid Prints of Landscapes and Strangers,” was up for viewing during the months of June and July, 2014. He has been published, been interviewed, and been reviewed in a quantity of magazines, from” F-Stop” and “ToneLit” to “The Film Shooter’s Collective.” He loves the magic sensuality of instant film: its saturated, surreal colors; the unpredictability of the medium; it’s addictive qualities as you watch it develop.
